Description
Tulbaghia ‘Purple Eye’
Tulbaghia ‘Purple Eye’ is a clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial from the society garlic family, valued for its neat grassy foliage and long season of interest. It typically reaches around 30-45cm in height, with a similar spread, forming tidy clumps of narrow, strap-like, greyish-green leaves that release a mild garlic scent when bruised.
From early summer through to autumn, it bears umbels of pale lilac-pink, star-shaped flowers, each marked with a distinctive darker purple eye at the centre, held on slender stems above the foliage on tall, wiry flower stalks. The blooms are attractive to bees and other pollinators, and are useful for adding soft colour to borders over a long period.
Cultivation is easy: grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and benefits from a sheltered position in colder gardens, with a dry winter mulch for protection. Deadhead spent flower stems to prolong flowering, and divide congested clumps in spring.
