Description
Schisandra chinensis
Schisandra chinensis, commonly known as magnolia vine or five-flavour fruit, is a vigorous, twining deciduous climber grown both for its ornamental qualities and its edible fruit. It typically reaches heights of 6-9m when given suitable support, with a spread of around 2-3m, making it well suited to covering a sturdy pergola, trellis or wall.
In late spring, fragrant creamy-white to pale pink flowers appear along the stems, followed in autumn by striking pendulous strings of glossy red berries. The glossy, mid-green foliage provides an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season.
Cultivation is relatively easy: plant in full sun or shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. It is fully hardy. Provide a robust support structure for the twining stems, and mulch annually to retain moisture. Prune in late winter to control size and remove congested growth.
