Description
Ornithogalum arabicum
Ornithogalum arabicum, commonly known as the Arabian Star Flower, is a bulbous perennial reaching around 45-60cm or more in height, with a spread of approximately 15-20cm. It produces strap-shaped, mid-green basal leaves and sturdy, upright stems topped with rounded clusters of fragrant, creamy-white, star-shaped flowers, each centred with a glossy black ovary. Flowering typically occurs in early to midsummer, making it a striking addition to borders, cutting gardens or container displays.
This species prefers a position in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant bulbs in autumn at a depth of around 10cm. While reasonably hardy in milder areas, it is best treated as half-hardy in most of the UK; a sheltered spot, good drainage and a protective mulch over winter are advisable, or bulbs may be lifted and stored frost-free until spring.
