Lychnis chalcedonica ‘Flore Plena’ is a striking double-flowered form of the Maltese cross, creating a magnificent display in the summer border. This hardy herbaceous perennial typically reaches heights of 90-120cm, producing sturdy upright stems topped with dense clusters of brilliant scarlet double flowers from June to August. The fully double blooms are considerably more showy than the single species, creating vibrant pompom-like flowerheads that are excellent for cutting.

This robust perennial thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It’s remarkably tolerant of various soil conditions but performs best in moisture-retentive ground. Regular watering during dry spells encourages prolonged flowering. Deadheading spent blooms will promote additional flushes of flowers throughout the season. The plant may benefit from staking in exposed positions due to its height.
