Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Slender Silhouette’

Description

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Slender Silhouette’

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Slender Silhouette’ is a strikingly narrow, columnar form of the American sweetgum, prized for its architectural upright habit. It typically reaches around 3-4 m in height (in 10 years) with a spread of only 1-1.5m, making it an excellent choice for tight spaces, avenues or as a vertical accent in smaller gardens.

The glossy, maple-like leaves are deeply lobed and turn spectacular shades of orange, red and purple in autumn, providing outstanding seasonal colour even within a restricted footprint. The bark is attractively corky and fissured on older specimens, adding winter interest.

Cultivation is straightforward: plant in full sun for the best autumn colour, in moist but well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It dislikes shallow chalk and waterlogged conditions. Once established it requires minimal pruning, though a sheltered position is advisable in exposed sites to protect the slender crown from wind damage.
