Hydrangea serrata ‘Flair & Flavours® Frozen Smoothie’ is a compact, bushy deciduous shrub reaching around 60-90cm in height, with a similar spread of 60-80cm. Unlike many hydrangeas, it flowers all along the stems rather than just at the tips, producing an abundance of large, lacecap blooms from midsummer right through until the first frosts. Flower colour varies with soil pH, appearing pink on neutral to alkaline soils and lavender-blue on more acidic ground. The dark green foliage turns attractive purple-red tones in autumn, adding a further season of interest.
Cultivation is straightforward: grow in full sun or part shade in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is fully hardy, tolerating temperatures down to around -25°C, though a sheltered spot is still beneficial in exposed UK gardens. Prune out old flowerheads in spring. Ideal for borders, containers or as a specimen shrub.
