Description
Drimiopsis maculata
Drimiopsis maculata, commonly known as African hosta or leopard plant, is a compact bulbous perennial native to South Africa, typically reaching 10-15cm in height with a similar spread. It forms neat clumps of fleshy, glossy green leaves attractively marked with dark purple-black spotting, giving rise to its common name and lending year-round interest even when not in flower.
In late spring to early summer, slender spikes of small, bell-shaped white to pale green flowers rise above the foliage, adding a subtle but charming display.
Cultivation is easy: grow in light shade to part sun in well-drained, humus-rich soil, watering moderately during the growing season and allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Best grown in a container and brought under cover over winter, as it dislikes frost and wet conditions.
