Description
Cyrtanthus elatus
Cyrtanthus elatus, commonly known as the Scarborough lily, is a bulbous perennial valued for its striking, funnel-shaped flowers. It typically reaches a height of around 45-60cm when in bloom, with strap-shaped, glossy green leaves arising from a basal clump. In late summer and into autumn, sturdy stems carry clusters of brilliant scarlet-red (occasionally pink or white) trumpet flowers, making it a real highlight for the season.
In the UK, Cyrtanthus elatus is best grown under glass or as a conservatory and houseplant, as it is not reliably hardy outdoors and dislikes prolonged frost. Plant bulbs in free-draining, loam-based compost with the neck just above soil level, in a bright position with some direct sunlight.
Water moderately during the growing season, reducing considerably once flowering has finished to allow a period of semi-dormancy. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during active growth, and repot only when necessary, as this plant flowers best when slightly pot-bound.
