Description
Cautleya spicata ‘Crug Canary’
Cautleya spicata ‘Crug Canary’ is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial from the ginger family, valued for its bright yellow, hooded flowers set against maroon-flushed bracts and stems. Originating in the Darjeeling region of India, It typically reaches around 45-60cm in height, with a spread of 30-45cm, forming upright clumps of broad, glossy, lance-shaped leaves. Flowering occurs from late summer into early autumn, adding welcome colour to the garden as many other perennials begin to fade.
This plant thrives in a sheltered position in partial shade, mimicking its native woodland-edge habitat, though it will tolerate more sun where soil remains consistently moist. Humus-rich, fertile, well-drained soil suits it best, with regular watering during the growing season to prevent the soil drying out.
Although reasonably hardy, a thick mulch over winter is advisable to protect the dormant rhizomes from hard frosts, particularly in colder or exposed gardens.
