Description
Ligularia japonica ‘Rising Sun’
Ligularia japonica ‘Rising Sun’ is a striking, clump-forming herbaceous perennial grown chiefly for its magnificent architectural foliage. It produces large, deeply cut and lobed palmate leaves of medium green, creating a bold, almost tropical-looking mound. Reaching around 1-1.5m in height with a spread of roughly 1m, it makes an excellent dramatic feature for a moist border or woodland setting.
From early to late summer, tall sturdy stems carry branched corymbs of bright yellow-orange, daisy-like flowers held well above the foliage, adding further height and seasonal interest.
Cultivation is straightforward given the right conditions: plant in full sun to partial shade in rich, deep, moisture-retentive soil, sheltered from strong, drying winds. It thrives in boggy or waterside positions and is fully hardy throughout the UK. The foliage dies back in winter, re-emerging vigorously each spring; a light tidy-up of old growth in autumn or early spring keeps plants looking their best.
