Description
Hydrangea quercifolia Burgundy
Hydrangea quercifolia Burgundy, commonly known as oak-leaved hydrangea, is a medium to large deciduous shrub with a bushy, spreading habit, reaching around 2m in height with a spread of up to 2.5m. Its large, deeply lobed leaves resemble oak foliage and are noted for producing the richest autumn colour of any oak-leaved hydrangea, turning striking shades of purple and burgundy.
From midsummer into early autumn, large conical panicles of creamy-white flowers appear, gradually ageing to a soft pink and looking especially lovely set against the turning foliage.
This shrub thrives in full sun or partial shade, in a sheltered spot with moderately fertile, moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil, ideally humus-rich. It is fully hardy, though may suffer some damage in severe winters, so leaving faded flowerheads on the stems over winter offers useful protection. Little pruning is required, making it a low-maintenance addition to borders or woodland planting schemes.
