Description
Hydrangea quercifolia Snow Giant
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Giant’ is a majestic, large-flowered form of oakleaf hydrangea, reaching around 1.8-2m in height with a similar or slightly greater spread. This deciduous shrub forms an upright, multi-stemmed habit with handsome, deeply lobed, oak-like leaves that turn rich crimson and deep red in autumn, offering superb seasonal interest.
From midsummer onwards, it produces large, upright panicles of double white flowers that mature through pale pink to tan, creating a long and striking season of interest. The cinnamon-brown, peeling bark adds further appeal through the winter months.
This is a relatively low-maintenance shrub, best grown in full sun or partial shade in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, with a mulch applied to help retain moisture around the roots. Little pruning is required, but any necessary pruning should be carried out immediately after flowering, as blooms form on the previous season’s growth. An excellent specimen or mass-planting shrub for borders.
