Description
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Black Porch’
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Black Porch’, commonly known as oakleaf hydrangea, is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub with a loose, spreading habit, typically reaching 1.2 in height with a similar spread at maturity. Its large, lobed leaves resemble oak foliage and turn rich bronze, purple and red tones in autumn, offering excellent seasonal interest alongside its flowers.
From midsummer into early autumn, conical flower trusses appear, opening white before ageing to a soft pink. Blooms are borne on old wood, so pruning should be kept to a minimum and carried out immediately after flowering if required.
This hydrangea thrives in full sun to partial shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is hardy but benefits from a sheltered position and a protective mulch over winter, particularly while young plants are becoming established. Low maintenance once settled, it suits borders, woodland edges and shrub beds.
