Description
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Queen’
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Queen’ is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub, part of the oakleaf hydrangea group, reaching around 1.5 in height with a similar spread at maturity. Its large, lobed, oak-shaped leaves emerge mid-green in spring before turning rich shades of red, orange and purple in autumn, offering superb seasonal interest. The cinnamon-coloured, peeling bark adds further appeal through winter.
From midsummer onwards, ‘Snow Queen’ produces impressive upright, conical panicles of creamy-white flowers, which age to a soft pink as they mature. These are excellent for cutting and drying, and the faded flower heads can be left on the plant to provide interest well into winter.
Best grown in partial shade or dappled sunlight, though it will tolerate full sun in cooler climates with adequate moisture. Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and mulch annually to retain moisture. Minimal pruning is required; simply remove dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring.
