Description
Fascicularia pitcairnifolia
Fascicularia pitcairnifolia is an unusual, hardy bromeliad forming dense, spiky rosettes of narrow, arching, silvery-green leaves edged with small spines. It typically reaches around 40–60cm in height and spread, slowly forming large architectural clumps over time. In late summer, the central leaves of each rosette flush bright red, surrounding clusters of small, pale blue flowers held low within the foliage, creating a striking two-tone effect.
This unusual perennial is best grown in full sun, in poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil. It is surprisingly hardy in the UK, particularly in milder coastal or southern gardens, though it benefits from a sheltered, south-facing position and protection from excessive winter wet. It thrives when grown on a wall, bank or among rocks, mimicking its natural epiphytic or saxicolous habitat. Little maintenance is needed beyond removing old or damaged leaves and allowing clumps to spread undisturbed.
