Description
Nerine humilis
Nerine humilis, commonly known as the dwarf nerine or mountain nerine, is a bulbous perennial native to the Cape region of South Africa, typically reaching 20-40cm in height. Strap-shaped, mid-green leaves appear in autumn alongside slender stems bearing umbels of one to twelve crenellated, pink flowers with attractively wavy petal edges.
Flowering takes place from September to November, after which the foliage persists over winter before dying back as the bulb enters summer dormancy. This is a half-hardy species that does not tolerate freezing conditions, so in cooler regions it is best grown under glass or given winter protection.
Cultivation is straightforward given the right conditions: plant bulbs with their necks just above the compost surface, in gritty, free-draining, loam-based compost. Position in full sun and water freely during active growth, reducing watering once the foliage dies back to keep bulbs warm and dry over summer. Bulbs flower best when slightly congested in their pots.
