Description
Cobaea pringlei
Cobaea pringlei is a vigorous, herbaceous climbing perennial, native to Mexico. It is a strong grower, capable of reaching 5-7m in a single season when given support, with slender, tendril-bearing stems and mid-green, divided leaves. From summer into autumn it bears funnel-shaped, creamy-white to pale green flowers in great profusion, carried on long stalks with prominent stamens.
Reasonably hardy in the UK, rated H3 to H4 by the RHS, but here in Wales seem totally hardy. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, with shelter from cold winds, and provide a sturdy trellis or similar support for the twining tendrils. In colder areas a protective mulch over winter is worthwhile, and any frost-damaged growth can be cut back in spring.
