Description
Lobelia ‘Hadspen Purple’
Lobelia ‘Hadspen Purple’ is an upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial reaching around 60-90cm in height, with a spread of 40-45cm. It produces lance-shaped, green to purple-flushed foliage arranged along sturdy, columnar stems, forming neat basal rosettes that give the plant good structure even before flowering begins.
From midsummer into early autumn, tall spires of two-lipped, velvety deep purple flowers appear, creating striking vertical accents in the border. The rich colouring works beautifully alongside late-season perennials and makes an excellent cut flower too.
Cultivation is easy: grow in full sun or partial shade in moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil. It is well suited to damp borders, bog gardens and pond-side plantings, and is also tolerant of coastal conditions. Benefits from winter mulch in colder areas and division every few years to maintain vigour.
