Symphytum uplandicum

Very easily grown ground cover plant for shade with pendulous creamy white flowers on arching stems. Quite quick growing and good for shade and sun alike, but not dry conditions. Height 15-30cm (6-12"). A plant for those who don't like weeding.

Growing Conditions: Symphytum uplandicum thrives in moist, fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. It prefers partial to full shade locations, but can tolerate some sun exposure, especially in cooler climates. This plant is hardy and can withstand temperatures down to around -20°C to -25°C. Consistent moisture is essential, as it does not tolerate dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for damp, shaded areas. Once established, it can spread rapidly and act as a living mulch, suppressing weeds.

Associated Unusual Plants: To create a harmonious and visually appealing shade garden, consider pairing Symphytum uplandicum with other shade-loving plants that offer contrasting textures and forms. Brunnera macrophylla (Siberian Bugloss) provides a lovely contrast with its large, heart-shaped leaves adorned with delicate blue flowers. Hakonechloa macra (Japanese Forest Grass) contributes a cascading habit with its arching, golden-yellow foliage, creating a soft and graceful counterpoint to the upright comfrey. Epimedium (Barrenwort) offers delicate, wiry stems with interesting foliage and fairy-like flowers, adding a touch of whimsy to the planting scheme. Finally, Asarum canadense (Canadian Wild Ginger) provides a low-growing, evergreen groundcover with heart-shaped leaves, creating a lush and verdant underplanting for the comfrey.
