Strelitzia reginae
Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as the Bird of Paradise or Crane Flower, is a striking perennial native to South Africa. This architectural plant is renowned for its distinctive, vibrant flowers and large, paddle-shaped leaves. Typically growing to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres, it can occasionally reach up to 2.5 metres in ideal conditions, making it a commanding presence in any garden or conservatory.
The plant's most notable feature is its extraordinary flower, which resembles a bird's head and beak. These blooms comprise vivid orange sepals and iridescent blue petals, emerging from a boat-shaped bract. The flowers appear atop long stems that rise above the foliage, creating a dramatic display that can last for several weeks.
Strelitzia reginae's foliage is equally impressive, with large, grey-green leaves that can grow up to 30 cm wide and 70 cm long. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this tropical beauty requires well-draining soil and protection from frost in UK gardens. It's often grown as a striking container plant or as a focal point in sheltered, exotic-themed outdoor spaces during warmer months.
