Stipa calamagrostis 'Allgäu'
Stipa calamagrostis 'Allgäu', also known as Silver Spike Grass, is an elegant and graceful ornamental grass that brings movement and texture to the garden. This cultivar forms dense, upright clumps of fine, arching, blue-green foliage that reaches a height of 60-90 cm. The leaves create a fountain-like effect, adding a soft, billowing presence to borders and beds.
From midsummer to early autumn, 'Allgäu' produces an abundance of airy, open panicles that rise well above the foliage, potentially reaching up to 150 cm in height. These inflorescences emerge with a slight pinkish tinge before maturing to a shimmering silvery-blonde colour. The plumes catch the slightest breeze, creating a mesmerising display of movement and light play in the garden.
Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, Stipa calamagrostis 'Allgäu' is drought-tolerant once established. It's an excellent choice for gravel gardens, prairie-style plantings, or as a specimen in contemporary landscapes. The dried flower heads provide winter interest and can be left standing to add structure to the winter garden.
