Sequoia sempervirens

Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the coast redwood, is an evergreen conifer native to the coastal regions of northern California and southern Oregon. Renowned for its immense height, it is among the tallest tree species on Earth, frequently reaching over 90 metres (295 feet), with some exceptional specimens exceeding 100 metres (328 feet). These towering giants possess thick, fibrous bark that offers resistance to fire and pests, while their needle-like leaves help capture moisture from coastal fog. Adapted to thrive in temperate, humid environments, coast redwoods grow in dense forests with rich, well-drained soils. Their impressive longevity, often spanning over 2,000 years, contributes to their ecological significance as they provide habitat for diverse wildlife. Despite their resilience, logging and environmental changes have significantly reduced their historical range. Conservation efforts continue to protect these extraordinary trees for future generations.
