Ranunculus ficaria 'Pwyll Prince of Dyfed' 9 cm

A really exciting plant bred here at the nursery. Named after Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed in the Mabinogion (Welsh Folk Lore) who was married to Great Queen Rhiannon (another of our Celandines). These huge flowered plants are quite stunning. Easily grown they are great for naturalising especially in wooded or shady areas. They become dormant during the summer months only to spring back to life in late winter. Flowers Feb-April depending upon weather. Height 15cm (6").

About the Family

Cultivated varieties of Ranunculus ficaria, known as lesser celandine or fig buttercup, offer a delightful array of easily nurtured options for woodlands and gardens, showcasing vibrant yellow, white, and orange blooms. Belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, these low-growing perennials, originating in Europe and Asia, have found a global presence.

In early spring, the glossy, heart-shaped leaves of these cultivated varieties complement the profusion of bright, buttercup-like flowers in shades of yellow, white, and orange. The golden, pristine whites, and warm oranges, gracefully held on slender stems, form an enchanting carpet of color, alluring pollinators and infusing the landscape with cheer.

Cultivating these diverse Ranunculus ficaria varieties proves straightforward, with a preference for moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. Their adaptability suits woodland gardens, areas under trees, or naturalizing in shaded spaces. Their early spring display and capacity to thrive in shaded environments make them invaluable for those desiring a burst of sunny color in woodland or naturalistic garden settings.

Although they can spread quite freely by March they are all but gone for another year.
