Platycerium bifurcatum

Platycerium bifurcatum, commonly known as the Stagshorn Fern, is a striking epiphytic fern native to tropical and subtropical regions of Australia and Southeast Asia. This unique plant is characterized by two distinct types of fronds: sterile and fertile. The sterile fronds, also called shield fronds, are flat, round to kidney-shaped, and grow against the mounting surface, eventually turning brown and papery. These act as anchors and collect nutrients for the plant.

The fertile fronds are the showstoppers, growing out from the center in a dramatic, antler-like formation that gives the plant its common name. These can reach up to 90 cm in length and are typically bright green, with a fuzzy, grey-green underside. The tips of these fronds may fork repeatedly, creating a complex, sculptural form.

Platycerium bifurcatum thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity. It's often mounted on boards or grown in hanging baskets, making it a popular choice for indoor gardens and a stunning architectural element in shaded outdoor spaces in warmer climates.
