Penstemon procerus var. formosus

Penstemon procerus var. formosus, commonly known as the Little Penstemon or Littleflower Penstemon, is a charming dwarf variety native to western North America. This compact perennial typically grows in low, mat-forming clumps reaching heights of 10-30 cm, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine troughs, or the front of borders.

The plant features narrow, lance-shaped leaves that form a dense basal rosette. From late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of small, tubular flowers in shades of deep purple to blue-violet. These vibrant blooms are arranged in tight, globe-like heads atop short stems, creating a striking contrast against the green foliage. Despite their small size, the flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies.

Penstemon procerus var. formosus thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining, gritty soil. It's notably drought-tolerant once established, making it an ideal choice for xeriscaping or low-maintenance gardens. This variety's compact nature and cold hardiness also make it suitable for challenging alpine or high-altitude environments.
