Nertera granadensis
Nertera granadensis, commonly known as the Coral Bead Plant or Pincushion Plant, is a diminutive evergreen perennial that creates a captivating carpet of colour. Growing to a mere height of 2-3 cm, this low-growing gem forms dense mats of tiny, round, bright green leaves that hug the ground in a compact fashion. In late spring, it produces minute white flowers that are barely noticeable amongst the foliage.
The real spectacle occurs in summer when the plant is adorned with masses of small, spherical, bright orange berries that sit proudly atop the foliage like miniature beads. These vibrant fruits persist for several weeks, creating a striking display that appears almost artificial in its perfection. The berries' brilliant colour makes a remarkable contrast against the fresh green leaves.
Best suited to sheltered positions in partial shade, this tender plant requires protection from frost and excessive wet. It excels in alpine houses, terrariums, or as an intriguing addition to container displays where its jewel-like berries can be appreciated up close.
