Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Cloud'
Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Cloud' is a striking ornamental grass that brings dramatic colour and movement to the garden. This deciduous perennial forms an upright, arching clump of narrow, ribbon-like leaves that reach a height of approximately 120-150 cm. The foliage emerges green in spring, gradually developing red tints as the season progresses, creating a vibrant display.
In late summer to early autumn, 'Red Cloud' produces spectacular plume-like flower heads that rise above the foliage, potentially reaching heights of 180-200 cm. These inflorescences emerge with a pronounced reddish-purple hue, softening to silvery-pink as they mature. The feathery panicles catch the light beautifully, adding a ethereal quality to the garden, especially when backlit by the low autumn sun.
Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, Miscanthus 'Red Cloud' is a robust and low-maintenance plant. It's an excellent choice for mixed borders, grassy meadows, or as a standalone specimen. The dried foliage and flower heads provide winter interest and can be left standing until early spring.
