Microsorum crocodyllus: The Crocodile Fern
Microsorum crocodyllus, commonly known as the Crocodile Fern, is a fascinating epiphytic species that captivates with its unique, textured foliage. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this unusual fern brings a touch of prehistoric charm to indoor spaces.
The fronds of M. crocodyllus are its most striking feature, growing up to 60 centimetres in length. Each leaf is deeply lobed and possesses a distinctive, bumpy texture that closely resembles the scaly hide of a crocodile, hence its evocative common name. The fronds emerge a vibrant green, maturing to a deeper, more muted shade that adds depth and character to the plant.
As an epiphyte, the Crocodile Fern naturally grows on tree trunks or rocks in its native habitat. In cultivation, it thrives in humid environments with bright, indirect light. Its unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements make M. crocodyllus a prized addition to terrariums, mounted displays, or as a standalone specimen in any fern enthusiast's collection.
