Jewel Orchid
The Jewel Orchid, known botanically as Ludisia discolor, is a unique and captivating houseplant prized not for its flowers but for its stunning foliage. This orchid features velvety, dark green to almost black leaves adorned with intricate, coppery-red veins that create a striking contrast. The leaves have a subtle sheen that adds to their jewel-like appearance, making this plant a true gem in any collection.
Unlike many orchids, the Jewel Orchid is relatively easy to care for. It thrives in low to medium light conditions, making it ideal for indoor environments with indirect sunlight. It prefers a well-draining, orchid-specific potting mix. During winter, the plant produces delicate spikes of small, white flowers, adding a touch of elegance to its already attractive form.
The Jewel Orchid is perfect for plant enthusiasts who appreciate foliage with intricate patterns and enjoy a low-maintenance yet visually stunning houseplant.
It is a beautiful, easily grown orchid this hybrid needs just a few special care points. Like most orchids they need very little water, a good soaking every week during the growing season and a good drain afterwards is perfect. Rain water is preferable. Although these can handle lower temperatures the prefer it in the range of 18-24 C, slightly cooler in the winter. Feed every couple of weeks from May-Sept. Remove flower spikes when over. Most importantly they need good light but not direct sunlight - this will burn them.
