Kalmia angustifolia 'Rubra'

One of the nicest of the smaller evergreen shrubs. Clusters of deep reddish pink flowers are borne amidst lanceolate foliage during the early summer months.Height 1m (3').

Kalmia angustifolia 'Rubra' thrives in acidic, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It prefers partial shade to dappled sunlight, as too much direct sun can scorch its foliage. This cultivar is hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to around -25°C to -30°C. Regular watering is essential, especially during the growing season, as Kalmia are shallow-rooted and susceptible to drought stress. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintains a cool root environment.

To create a captivating and complementary display, consider pairing Kalmia angustifolia 'Rubra' with other acid-loving plants that offer contrasting textures and forms. Gaultheria procumbens (Wintergreen) provides a lovely groundcover with its glossy, evergreen foliage and bright red berries, creating a lush underplanting for the Kalmia. Leucothoe (Fetterbush) contributes arching stems with glossy, evergreen leaves that turn beautiful shades of red and purple in autumn, creating a striking contrast with the kalmia's deep pink blooms. Rhododendron yakushimanum (Yakushima Rhododendron) offers a bold, compact form with its leathery, evergreen foliage and trusses of delicate flowers, echoing the colour palette of the kalmia. Finally, Dryopteris erythrosora (Autumn Fern) adds a touch of warmth with its upright, copper-colored fronds, complementing the reddish hues of the kalmia's flowers.
