Hypoestes phyllostachya

Hypoestes phyllostachya, commonly known as the Polka Dot Plant, is a delightful and vibrant foliage plant native to Madagascar. This compact, bushy perennial is cherished for its eye-catching leaves, which feature a striking pattern of colourful spots against a contrasting background. While the most common variety showcases pink spots on green leaves, cultivars are available in a range of colours including white, red, and purple.

Typically growing to a height of 30-45 cm, the Polka Dot Plant forms a dense mound of oval-shaped leaves. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent choice for terrariums, mixed container plantings, or as a colourful groundcove. In late summer to autumn, it may produce small, insignificant pink or purple flowers, though the plant is primarily grown for its decorative foliage.

Hypoestes phyllostachya thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil. It's often grown as a houseplant, where its bold patterns can add a splash of colour to indoor spaces year-round. Regular pinching encourages bushier growth, maintaining its compact and attractive form.
