For those who want the exotic look the hardy Gingers may well fit the bill. This very rare species has tall, leafy, almost bamboo-like stems with pure white fragrant flowers from August. Not sure about hardiness as there seems to be no information anywhere about it but should be OK outside most years. Can reach 2m in height in a good year - impressive.
