Haemanthus humilis

Haemanthus humilis, commonly known as the Paint Brush Lily, this rare striking bulbous perennial native to South Africa. This compact species typically grows to a height of 15-30 cm, making it suitable for pots. The plant is characterized by its broad, tongue-shaped leaves that lie close to the ground, often with a prostrate growth habit.

The flowers of Haemanthus humilis are its most notable feature, appearing in late summer to autumn. Each inflorescence consists of a dense cluster of small, brush-like flowers surrounded by large, showy bracts. These bracts are usually pale pink, creating the illusion of a single, paintbrush-shaped bloom. The leaves can reach really larghe proportions up to 30cm across.

Thriving in partial shade to full sun, Haemanthus humilis prefers well-draining soil and is drought-tolerant once established. It's an excellent choice for rock gardens, Mediterranean-style plantings, or as a unique specimen in containers. The plant goes dormant in late winter resprouting in summer
