Cryptomeria japonica 'Rasen-Sugi'
Cryptomeria japonica 'Rasen-Sugi', commonly known as Japanese Cedar 'Rasen-Sugi', is a unique cultivar characterised by its distinctive spiral growth pattern. The needles twist dramatically around the branches, creating an eye-catching corkscrew effect. This evergreen conifer typically reaches heights of 8-10 metres over 20 years in cultivation, developing into a narrow, columnar form.
The cultivar thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils in sheltered positions. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires protection from harsh winds to prevent winter bronzing of the foliage. In the UK climate, 'Rasen-Sugi' is hardy to -15°C but benefits from a sheltered position in colder regions.
This striking specimen makes an excellent focal point in Japanese-style gardens or modern landscape designs. Regular watering is essential during establishment, though mature specimens are relatively drought tolerant. Annual mulching with well-rotted organic matter in spring helps maintain soil moisture and fertility. Light pruning can be undertaken in late spring to maintain shape if desired.
