Cryptanthus bivittatus
Cryptanthus bivittatus, commonly known as the Starfish Plant or Earth Star, is a striking bromeliad native to Brazil. This low-growing, terrestrial plant forms a rosette of leathery, strap-like leaves that typically reach 10-15 cm in diameter. The foliage is the main attraction, featuring bold patterns of green and white or pink stripes that radiate from the centre, creating a star-like appearance when viewed from above.
The leaves of C. bivittatus are often wavy or undulating, adding texture to the plant's overall form. In optimal conditions, it may produce small, inconspicuous white flowers nestled in the centre of the rosette, though the plant is primarily grown for its ornamental foliage.
Thriving in bright, indirect light and high humidity, Cryptanthus bivittatus makes an excellent houseplant or terrarium subject. It prefers well-draining soil and moderate watering, with water collected in the central cup of the rosette. This compact and visually intriguing plant is perfect for adding a tropical touch to indoor spaces.
